Decay and Dental Emergencies Increase During the Holidays

Every year, dental offices across the country see thousands of patients, especially during the holiday season.  The number of scheduled patients can easily double in the last few months of the year.

Tooth Decay and Repairs

Tooth cavities don’t just suddenly appear.  The sugary food and drinks we consume during the holiday season tend to increase and a tooth cavity can quickly worsen requiring immediate attention.

Every office, bank or store you go into during the holidays is serving lollipops, chocolates or sticky candy at the front desk. Candies that stick to dental crowns account for the majority of the repairs seen during the holiday season. So beware and try to avoid eating the sticky candy, especially if your teeth have crowns.smile holiday

Cosmetic Dental Treatments

From all of the holiday parties thrown by work, friends and family, the sudden urge to have bright white teeth tends to also increase during the holiday season. More patients are reminded to get their teeth cosmetically whitened or repaired.

Year End Dental Insurance Maximum

Most insurance plans have a yearly maximum that must be used by December 31st.  Patients that have dental treatments they’ve been putting off all year due to their busy schedules, tend to finally focus on getting them done prior to year end.

Dental insurance maximums do not roll over to the next year, “if you don’t use it, you lose it” said Dr. Saliba, a trusted Orange County dentist in the heart of Corona Del Mar.

“Every year, we send a reminder to our patients making them aware that this is it.  On many occasions their yearly deductible is met and this is a way for them to save if they have a dental necessity they’ve been avoiding”.

Oral health is very important all year long, no matter when you chose to care for your teeth, Dr. Saliba says “just do it”.  Our mouth is the entry way to the rest of our body, caring for our oral health directly relates to our overall health and wellbeing.

Best “Tooth-Friendly Foods” for Kids

The phrase ‘you are what you eat’ is actually true for teeth. The worst enemy of a tooth is acid; either produced by the bacteria that thrives on sugar or contained directly in food or drinks. The best tooth-friendly foods are ones that provide minerals, neutralize acids and the vitamins for stimulating saliva and repairing the tooth enamel. Whenever you plan to prepare meals or snacks for your children, try to incorporate the following tooth-friendly foods to keep their bodies and teeth healthy:

Apples

Eating apples is like using a natural toothbrush as it helps to stimulate the gums, prevents the cavity build-up and increases the flow of saliva in your mouth. They are also loaded with numerous healthy minerals and vitamins. healthy teeth

Celery

This vegetable is full of dental health benefits. Chewing celery helps to produce more saliva in the mouth, which prevents the plaque production as well. Make your kids eat celery once a week at least.

Dairy Products

Dairy products help your teeth in several ways if they do not contain added sugar.

  • Cheese helps to stimulate the saliva and the calcium in it helps to replace the minerals that are leached from your teeth.
  • Dairy products like yogurt, milk and other similar products provide phosphates and calcium which are beneficial to teeth. Enriched milk gives a good amount of Vitamin D which assists your body with calcium.
  • A recent study published in the Journal of Oral Dentistry shows that kids who take at least 4 servings per week of dairy are less likely to have cavities as compared to those who did not.
  • Children can enjoy cubes of the calcium rich cheese along with apple slices as an after school snack. It is perfect for their teeth.
  • Give low-sugar yogurts to your children for making their teeth healthier than before.

Whole Grain Snacks

Snacks made from whole grain are low in calories and sugar which is an added bonus for the diet of kids. You can start with the whole grain crackers and cereals that are a big hit among the kids. There are many whole grains that are full of vitamins, minerals and fiber; all the factors which make your kids’ teeth stronger and healthier. Apart from the snacks, you can also present whole grain food with varieties of rice, pasta and bread.

Kiwi

Kiwis are an excellent source of Vitamin C. Intake of Vitamin C helps your body to maintain the collagen network in the gums, fastens the healing, strengthens the gums and prevents your gum from infections. Kiwi also helps to prevent the periodontal disease.

Other Important Tips For Keeping Teeth Healthy

  • Juicy, crunchy vegetables and fruits are very high in water content. They help offset the sugar content in them as well.
  • Also the foods that are high in fiber are the foundation of a healthy diet. They make your teeth healthier as well.
  • Water is indispensable for oral health. It is very important for both gum and tooth health as it is the basic component of saliva.
  • Water works as the rinsing agent for the sugary drinks and foods. Fluoridated water prevents tooth decay as it strengthens the tooth enamel.

Lost Crown

  • Make a quick appointment with your dentist if your crown falls off. Do not forget to take your crown with you.
  • Use cotton swab for applying clove oil to sensitive area if you are unable to reach your dentist and your tooth is causing a lot of pain.
  • Slip that crown back over your tooth if possible. If you do so, make sure you are not using glue. Coat inner surface with the dental cement, denture adhesive or a toothpaste.

Broken Or Chipped Teeth

  • Save the pieces of the chipped teeth, if any.
  • Rinse the broken pieces and your mouth using warm water.
  • If there is bleeding, apply a gauze piece to the affected area until bleeding stops or for around 10 minutes.
  • For relieving the pain or keep the swelling down, apply cold compress to outside of your lip near the chipped/broken teeth, cheek or mouth.

Objects Caught Between The Teeth

  • Use the dental floss to carefully and very gently remove the object.
  • Do not, in any case, use any sharp object or a pin to poke at that stuck object. Such instruments can scratch the tooth surface or cut your gums.
  • See your dentist immediately if you fail to remove the object from your teeth.

Lost Filling

  • If you lose a filling, you can use a dental cement that is easily available over-the-counter until you’re able to see the dentist.

Broken Wires And Braces

  • If a wire sticks or breaks out of a band or bracket and pokes your gum, tongue or cheek, try using a pencil eraser end for pushing the wire to a comfortable position.
  • Cover this end with an orthodontic wax, piece of gauze or small cotton ball if you are unable to reposition the wire.
  • Never cut the wire otherwise you may end up breathing or swallowing it into the lungs.

Loose Bands And Brackets

  • Re-attach the loose braces temporarily with small piece of the orthodontic wax.
  • You can alternatively place wax over brace for providing a cushion.
  • If your band is loose, save it and immediately call your dentist to fix an appointment and have it replaced or re-cemented.

Brushing after meals, flossing and fluoride products are helpful when it comes to this process. Once you determine that you have a cavity, it is important to visit your dentist. Corona Del Mar Dentist answers the question: How Old Should You Be to Get Braces?

Many parents know that braces are going to be in their kids’ future. These are generally children suffering from alignment issues. In other cases, the spacing of the teeth is the problem. The need for braces is determined by a qualified orthodontist. There is not set age for children to get braces. In fact, the ages will certainly vary depending on one particular issue, permanent teeth.

braces for kids

“Braces cannot be applied to teeth that are not permanent” says Newport Beach dentist Dr. Saliba. This makes a big difference on the age of the child getting braces quite a bit. Regular dental visits are a good way to find out if teeth are permanent. Some studies show that the first orthodontist visit should be scheduled around age 6. This doesn’t mean that braces will be applied this early. The doctor will be able to determine what issues exist and diagnose when braces will be needed. Let’s take a look at some of the common issues related to braces.

Over or Under Bite

There are a variety of reasons that children need braces. Two of these are overbite and under bite. Some will experience this issue naturally. Children prone to sucking their thumbs could encourage this issue. This will impact the way that teeth eventually grow. The display of the teeth shows your doctor if bite problems are involved.

Accidents

Accidents are sometimes culprits behind the alignment of the teeth. These can be caused by falls or even automobile accidents. Some issues can be fixed by your dentist when these things occur. There are others that will require braces to fix. These are more long-term dental issues. Teeth are sometimes removed to make it possible for braces to work the best.

Type of Braces

Parents are often surprised to find out how many braces types there are. Metal styles are some of the most common seen. There are invisible braces on the market as well. Your orthodontist will be able to help you make the right decision. In some cases, children will wear either upper or lower braces. Both of these may be required in your particular case.  Invisalign teen dentist in Orange County Dr. Saliba also shared that the Invisalign Teen product has increased in popularity due to their comfort fitting alignments and eliminates the teasing usually associated with wearing braces.

Braces will vary in pricing depending on the type that you get. Payment plans are often available through many facilities. This is an investment for the future appearance of the child. Children, teens and adults benefit from getting braces to better align their teeth. This is a way to help people feel comfortable about their appearance and their smiles.
